How to Align with Your Values During the Holidays: A Guide to Living Authentically<\/h1>\n

The holiday season is designed to gather and carry out generational traditions that some people expect to stay the same\u2026 forever. But what happens when you change? When your values evolve so that certain traditions no longer resonate with you? That can make authentic living a little more challenging.<\/p>\n

\"New<\/p>\n

Do you keep following the tried-and-true traditions even if they make you feel bad and you have to pretend that you like them? Or do you live in alignment with your values so that you authentically feel good because you are practicing authentic living?<\/h4>\n

One of my core values is health. And my definition of health has changed dramatically since a back injury over a decade ago. I had been suffering from health issues for most of my life, but that was the wake-up call I needed to make a change. Since then, I have treated my body as my #1 priority for my health. Being mindful of what I put in it and how I take care of it.<\/p>\n

\u274c I don\u2019t eat certain foods anymore that cause me distress. \u2705 I choose foods that nourish my body.<\/p>\n

\u274c I don\u2019t stay up late drinking. \u2705 I choose to go to bed early and get a good night’s sleep.<\/p>\n

\u274c I don\u2019t want to talk about superficial things. \u2705 I choose to talk about real life.<\/p>\n

When I started making these shifts, it was hard for people to understand I wasn\u2019t the same person I was before. I changed and was beginning my authentic living journey.<\/p>\n

I still wanted to be a part of the traditions and enjoy spending quality time together. It just had to be real. Instead of putting on a mask and morphing into an old version of myself, I had to be me.<\/p>\n

As in, if I am around my college buddies, that means I have to be that version of myself that drank too much and did stupid things.<\/p>\n

\"New<\/p>\n

No thanks, that isn\u2019t me anymore and what I consider authentic living.<\/h4>\n

And guess what?<\/em><\/p>\n

Since showing my loved ones how I have changed, it\u2019s permitted them to change, too. By setting my boundaries<\/a>. It showed them that they don\u2019t have to do things because of the \u201cshoulds<\/strong>\u201d or the \u201cthat\u2019s how it always is.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

They can do things because they really want to. It is beautiful to watch a seed planted of possibility inspire someone to start their authentic living journey. Especially because of how vulnerable and uncomfortable it feels to be the first to stand up for something different.<\/p>\n

So, if you are feeling some dread or anxiety this holiday season like you have conceded to things you don\u2019t really want to do\u2026<\/p>\n

Think to yourself, what would be possible if I was the real authentic me? How would it feel to express myself fully? What if I released what didn\u2019t serve me?<\/p>\n

\"New<\/p>\n

That is all possible when you align with your values and begin your authentic living journey.<\/h4>\n

It\u2019s that simple and that complex. But it\u2019s absolutely possible.<\/p>\n

And it all starts with you.<\/p>\n

I learned\u00a0three ways\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>to\u00a0help you in your authentic living journey.<\/h4>\n
Authentic Living Tip #1 – Communicate Your Values<\/strong><\/h5>\n

You have specific values that drive you. The things that make you feel alive. All humans have them. It\u2019s a common language that we speak. So, it\u2019s an excellent way for you to communicate how you have changed. When I first started to change what I ate. People didn\u2019t understand it. I often heard: \u201cYou ate this all your life. How can you not eat it anymore?<\/em>\u201dInstead of getting defensive or angry, they got it when I shared why it was so important to me and my value of health. Because they wanted to support me, they wanted me to be healthy, too.<\/p>\n

What loved one would intentionally want you to do something that caused you pain and distress? (If they DO, then it is time to set some bigger boundaries to protect your well-being)<\/p>\n

When you help people understand why your values are important to you, they start to get it. Because they have values, too!<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t be afraid to remind them more than once. Living your values is all about speaking up for them daily.<\/p>\n

Authentic Living Tip #2 – <\/strong>Show Your Values In Action
\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n

When you tell someone how your values are changing and then show them those values in action, that is a recipe for success. That is how humans learn! You help people understand you more when they can see it. It can help people go from \u201cWhat are you talking about?<\/em>\u201d to \u201cI see what you mean.<\/em>\u201dSo when people want to stay up late partying, I see if we can meet up earlier or set boundaries around how late I can stay out or see if we can do something else. I can still enjoy time with them but not violate one of my values. And if they ask why? That is a perfect opportunity to communicate your values while showing your values in action. Be the change you want to see in this world.<\/p>\n

Authentic Living Tip #3- <\/strong>Don\u2019t Take Things Personally<\/strong><\/h5>\n

It can be difficult for people to understand the new you when you evolve and change. They have expectations of who you are based on past experiences, but you are not that person anymore. It can be frustrating when they don\u2019t accept that or understand that. The best thing you can do? Not take it personally. Humans do not like change, even though it\u2019s always happening. When you change, some people might get it and accept it immediately. For others, it may take some more time. So, if you typically have conversations about the weather and you start talking about the meaning of life. Don\u2019t take it personally if others don\u2019t engage right away. You can\u2019t expect that, or else you will set yourself up for disappointment.<\/p>\n

\"New<\/p>\n

But if you want to change the world around you, you must change your world first. You must have the courage to be yourself and not think about the expectations of others.<\/p>\n

Control the only thing you can truly control:\u00a0Yourself!\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

And remember to keep going. This is not a one-and-done thing. Each day, you get to choose to live in alignment with your values.<\/p>\n
