{"id":23058,"date":"2024-01-29T11:18:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-29T16:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sparkvisionnow.com\/?p=23058"},"modified":"2024-01-29T11:18:00","modified_gmt":"2024-01-29T16:18:00","slug":"questions-to-ask-a-mentor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sunneez.com\/sparkvision\/questions-to-ask-a-mentor\/","title":{"rendered":"Questions to Ask a Mentor"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>How to Choose the Right Mentor: Key Questions to Ensure Values and Goals Alignment<\/h1>\n<p class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we close out National Mentoring Month, I find myself reflecting on the transformative impact of mentorship not only in professional endeavors but, more importantly, in the grand tapestry of our lives with questions to ask a mentor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/halo.com\/10-compelling-facts-about-national-mentoring-month\/\">Research shows<\/a>\u00a0that\u2026<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li><strong>67%<\/strong>\u00a0of businesses reported an<strong>\u00a0increase in productivity\u00a0<\/strong>due to mentoring<\/li>\n<li><strong>55%<\/strong>\u00a0of businesses felt that mentoring had a\u00a0<strong>positive impact on their profits<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>87%<\/strong>\u00a0of mentors and mentees feel empowered by their mentoring relationship and\u00a0<strong>develop greater confidence<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Mentees are\u00a0<strong>5x<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>more likely to be promoted<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>84%<\/strong>\u00a0of CEOs said mentors had helped them\u00a0<strong>avoid costly mistakes<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But let\u2019s get real &#8211; these relationships can be profound life-changers or disappointing duds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/media3.giphy.com\/media\/VgkjDGwJvLwEQlXQkf\/giphy.gif?cid=ecf05e47bsnlg3j780zzrva1mnj823vkljxui4hjh9ffzjk8&amp;ep=v1_gifs_search&amp;rid=giphy.gif&amp;ct=g\" alt=\"Mentoring Maribeth Monroe GIF by CBS questions to ask a mentor\" width=\"416\" height=\"233\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have been fortunate to have many life-changing mentors and mentees in my life. I\u2019ve also had mentors who thought nothing of being on their phones our entire time together. And I had mentees who seemed to just use me as an ATM.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hands down, the most impactful mentor in my life was my graduate school supervisor, John Green. He taught me how important relationship building was in order to have organic and strategic success. It was something I always knew deep down, but he showed me step-by-step how to make it a part of standard expectations for how I led and the culture we created together.<\/p>\n<h4>All it took was slowing down, getting curious, and connecting authentically.<\/h4>\n<p>His embodiment of those values stuck with me in a major way for the rest of my life.\u00a0<br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/j6_oLNoyZLztV3SgMWsTbLUsbhQ4tYb2qPAqm1Whv_S9vCyBwVN3w-odi8ouX_wgdkfPJh491MpCfC6U5-rbn_e-EBmxf2liLEfOWvWDpQJjBoDZxfzFDbo36Xa63_MIWxwRNIjWB0vU8RAUaD_RZCg\" width=\"421\" height=\"405\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>(Me and John on his rooftop in NYC during my graduation party he generously hosted.)<\/em><\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My mentors have ranged from executives who saw my potential and wanted to help me soar to friends who are achieving success in ways I hope to one day. As I grew older and started my own business, I became more intentional about who I invested my time with and took advice from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And lemme tell ya, it became suuuuper challenging to take advice from someone who I\u2019d once admired only to realize they didn\u2019t share my core values. Most of the time, they were giving me directions straight to burnout.<\/p>\n<p>It was like my mentor criteria simply entailed: public image, wealth and reputation. I never considered how they went about achieving. Never pondered, \u201cAre they happy?\u201d, \u201cDo they have a sense of well-being?\u201d or \u201cWhat\u2019s the quality of their relationships?\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>I hadn&#8217;t reflected on questions to ask a mentor&#8230;<\/h4>\n<p>Essentially, I made a whole bunch of assumptions based on values that were never mine.<\/p>\n<h4>What I know for sure today is that life is most impactful when your goals and values are in alignment.\u00a0<em>So why not find a mentor who is doing that, too?<\/em><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/huCU3_mr0rsw6Q5Lwq9njtXXNZSvZFMhf2zt-coJUB8zzuOYc27GWJdHyZFWcWQlGXRqIs5eqwGeRJnYGDDkcOs6rBmg2udz1V3ew_DTUfyIyVwPuTmGRc2HigHXmEQIzU10H5jmnq87a9sl7-l253I\" width=\"439\" height=\"439\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So before you dive into investing in your next mentoring relationship, stop and reflect on\u00a0<em>why<\/em>\u00a0you want it and what you\u2019re willing to do to\u00a0<em>invest<\/em>\u00a0in that outcome.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li><u>Define Your Aspirations:<\/u>\u00a0Clearly articulate what you seek to gain and give from the mentorship. Understand your values, goals, and the areas in which you desire guidance. And get clear on how you\u2019re going to nurture that relationship with intention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then filter your mentoring relationships by understanding where you\u2019re in alignment and where you differ. While embracing differences is enriching &#8211; be sure that you\u2019re asking someone for directions who has traveled the path in a way that you want to travel it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Consider these three questions to ask a mentor and yourself:<\/h4>\n<ol style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li><strong>Do their core values match mine?\ud83d\udc9e<\/strong> AKA Values Alignment! Explore whether your values align with those of your mentor. A shared foundation in core values ensures that the guidance you receive resonates with your authentic beliefs. Values mentors focus on shared values rather than formal credentials. This paradigm shift recognizes that mentorship is not about status but about embodying specific values that align with your aspirations. With John, he embodied the values of connection, authenticity, curiosity and well-being. Do you wish you live a life of simplicity, prioritizing time with loved ones? If so, does your mentor live that type of life? Or are they working 24\/7 and missing out on milestones outside of the office? Their experiences often shape their advice, making it crucial that their journey aligns with your vision.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do they have wisdom in an area I want to grow in?\ud83e\udd89<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Look for mentors who possess skills or experiences that align with your values and goals. Long-term success in mentorship is often grounded in the mentor&#8217;s expertise in an area you wish to explore. And if you want to get really deep in it together, establish clear expectations. How often will you meet and what area of growth do you want to focus on? Values-driven mentors ensure that both parties agree on the objectives, ensuring a mutually beneficial journey toward personal and professional growth.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we venture into 2024, let&#8217;s not only seek success in our professional endeavors but also enrich our lives through authentic connections and mentorship that transcend the boundaries of the workplace.
