Transformative Lessons from Gentling Wild Mustangs: How a Life-Changing Adventure Helped Me Reclaim My Power<\/h1>\n

The past 24 days of observing and gentling wild mustangs were like a portal – where I walked in as one person and emerged as another. I will never be who I was before this experience, and for that, I am grateful.<\/p>\n

And it almost didn\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n

You see, I\u2019d never worked with mustangs, I had no experience starting a horse, and was told by people more experienced than me that it was too dangerous. So I didn\u2019t think I deserved it.<\/p>\n

But after 2 consecutive years of crying my eyes out on my birthday because I felt like such a loser, I knew I wanted something different as I turned 40. I decided this year I was taking my power back. So I summoned my mindfulness tools, doubled-down on my values, and got accepted!<\/p>\n

Then, just 3 days before I left, my cherished soul sister, Janyelle, died at 39<\/a>. A day after that, I experienced a massive family trauma that reopened all the toxic wounds I\u2019d been licking clean over the last two years. The night before I left, my body broke down, leaving me sleeping on the floor next to our compostable toilet, praying I\u2019d be able to function the next day.<\/p>\n

To put it lightly, I was barely hanging in there. This big adventure was either the best or worst timing imaginable.<\/h4>\n

And I realized I had a choice:<\/h4>\n

A) continue to protect my hell and suffer in my victimhood \ud83d\udc7f
\nOR
\nB) choose to welcome my heaven and heal by taking my power back \ud83e\udebd<\/h4>\n

\u2764\ufe0f\u200d\ud83e\ude79So, I allowed myself to see the unexpected death as a reminder to invest in your values and make time for what you are passionate about NOW. Tomorrow is not promised.<\/p>\n

\u2764\ufe0f\u200d\ud83e\ude79I chose to set even stronger boundaries around the trauma dynamics I did not need to participate in anymore. I released, expressed and shed faster than ever.<\/p>\n

\u2764\ufe0f\u200d\ud83e\ude79And I thanked my body for speaking to me and letting me know she was at her limit. I promised to do everything in my power to respond with love as soon as she whispers for help.<\/p>\n

On the snowy 3-hour drive from our ranch in Idaho to our Mustang meetup in Montana, I shifted. My resilience was at an all-time high, and I was ready to feel a change in my day-to-day norm.<\/p>\n

But I never expected the shift to feel worse.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s exactly what happened.<\/p>\n

A summer snowstorm trapped us on the top of the Pryor Mountains while we observed wild Mustangs. Rain and snow pelted our tent and through my sleeping bag. I didn\u2019t have anything warm to heat me up from the inside because my body was rejecting the food.<\/p>\n

My basic needs were not met, and I felt like the universe was playing a cruel game of \u201cLet\u2019s see how much you can take! Muhahahah!\u201d \ud83e\uddb9<\/h4>\n

I questioned every decision I made leading up to that moment. Why can\u2019t I just be normal and play it safe? Why did I have to push myself all the time? What was I doing with my life?<\/em> James was so worried he nearly drove up to find me and take me back home.<\/p>\n

Once again, I had to choose. To protect my hell? \ud83d\udc7fOr welcome my heaven?\ud83e\udebd<\/h4>\n

Using the same skills, I chose to heal. Here are three things I learned on that snow-covered mountains surrounded by wild mustangs that can serve you, too.<\/p>\n

    \u26f0\ufe0f Nature can be cruel and kind all at once. <\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Seeing a one-day-old foal was a highlight. It was just doin’ its thang, learning how to live on a mountain in the snow. It was gorgeous to witness.<\/span><\/p>\n

    And in less than 24 hours, we learned he wasn\u2019t going to make it. The baby was born with a defect in its hoof and within days, it was killed by stronger members of their family band.<\/p>\n

    It was a sad reminder that nature can be unforgiving, and sometimes difficult choices are made for the greater good. From a human perspective, it invited the reflection on:<\/p>\n

    What parts of myself am I protecting that might be more kind to put down and stop limping through? What kindness might there be in death?<\/h4>\n

    \ud83d\udc40When you look for beauty, you find it.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    On the last morning in the mountains, we planned to wake up before sunrise and search for Mustangs. It meant being up before 5 a.m., and all my body wanted to do was sleep. So I decided if I was awake, I\u2019d go and be open to taking in the beauty (and not just the cold) of this experience.<\/p>\n

    My body was up at 4 a.m., so I knew my choice. I got myself ready, and then Mother Nature wrapped her arms around me and showed me what I\u2019d hoped to see! Dozens of wild mustangs came together in the morning light to graze, play, and be together.<\/p>\n

    Watching the beauty of their movement and connection calmed me and reminded me of the beauty that\u2019s always there to see when you choose to look for it instead of focusing on the ugly.<\/h4>\n

    \ud83d\udc9eMembers of your chosen family are still out there waiting to meet you.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    It can be easy to stick with the circle you know and not branch out, especially as an adult. But I knew it would be inevitable that I\u2019d connect with good people on this adventure. I mean, we all signed up for something that was a pretty intensive, significant investment – it immediately means we share values.<\/p>\n

    What I didn\u2019t realize was that my newest soul sister, Anja, would become chosen family nearly instantly. She had traveled from Germany, and it was also her first time working with Mustangs. We were elders of the group. And both of us had a firm understanding of ourselves and our boundaries. We were tent-mates turned hotel mates when we opted out of the last night of camping on our own.<\/p>\n

    She helped me to see that there\u2019s so much more chosen family out there just waiting to meet you! When you invest in your values, you\u2019ll naturally find one another.<\/h4>\n
