So, I started to wonder what can a boundary be used for&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I spent years believing that being available to others\u2014whether it was my family, friends, or colleagues\u2014was the secret to feeling valued. I thought, \u201cIf I\u2019m always the one people can count on, I\u2019ll be seen as reliable, dependable\u2026 maybe even irreplaceable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But here\u2019s the problem: I didn\u2019t realize how much of myself (and my soul) I was giving away in the process.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until I was <strong>clinically diagnosed with <a href=\"https:\/\/sparkvisionnow.com\/it-wasnt-always-like-this-from-work-addict-to-wellbeing-coach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">work addiction<\/a><\/strong> almost eight years ago that I finally stopped and asked myself: \u201c<em>What is all of this costing me?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You see, I was living OTHER PEOPLE\u2019s values instead of honoring my own. I was <strong>people-pleasing<\/strong> to the point where I no longer recognized my needs. I was overcommitting and constantly drained, telling myself I had to keep going because others depended on me. I realized that <strong>boundaries are not about keeping people out<\/strong> but about c<strong>reating space for well-being.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And you know what else? <strong>Boundaries don\u2019t push people away.<\/strong> They often <strong>draw people in closer<\/strong> because they allow you to show up fully\u2014without resentment, without burnout and with mutual respect.<\/p>\n<p>I want to share three key lessons I\u2019ve learned through my boundary-setting journey. These lessons changed everything for me, and I believe they can do the same for you if you are wondering what a boundary can be used for.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>\ud83e\udde0<strong> Key Takeaway #1: Your Mindset is the Foundation<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>At the heart of boundary-setting is <strong>mindset<\/strong>. The stories we tell ourselves are powerful. For the longest time, my story was: \u201cIf I say no, people will think I\u2019m unreliable. If I set boundaries, they\u2019ll stop depending on me, and I\u2019ll lose opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the lie I told myself, and it trapped me in a cycle of <strong>overwork and exhaustion.<\/strong> But the truth is, <strong>boundaries are a form of self-respect<\/strong>. When I started to catch those limiting beliefs in action, I realized how much they held me back.<\/p>\n<p>The first step? <strong>Awareness<\/strong>. Simply noticing the beliefs that drive your decisions can change everything. I used to believe that to be successful, I had to say yes to everything. Once you identify the limiting belief\u2014like, \u201cIf I say no, I\u2019ll disappoint everyone\u201d\u2014you can flip that belief into something that empowers you.<\/p>\n<p>For example, when I used to think, \u201cIf I set a boundary, they\u2019ll think I\u2019m difficult,\u201d I began reframing that thought: \u201cBy setting this boundary, I\u2019m showing others what self-respect looks like.\u201d And when I worried that saying no would upset people, I reframed it to: \u201cBy saying no, I\u2019m creating space for what truly matters\u2014for me and others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just about changing the words\u2014it\u2019s about <strong>shifting your perspective.<\/strong> Once you do that, everything opens up. I used to do that all the time. I\u2019d say, \u201cToday is the day I\u2019m going to prioritize my needs,\u201d and then I\u2019d let everything else take over.<\/p>\n<p>I had to start practicing <strong>setting boundaries with myself.<\/strong> That means committing to things that honor your well-being, even when it\u2019s hard. It might be as simple as <strong>choosing to go for that walk<\/strong>, even when your inbox is overflowing. Or, it could be speaking up in a meeting when you\u2019d rather stay silent.<\/p>\n<p>When I finally started setting boundaries with myself, setting them with others became so much easier. Why? Because I was no longer relying on external validation to feel good.
