And there\u2019s a better way to motivate yourself.<\/p>\n<p>As a former college athlete, I know how to take things personally. I lived to prove people wrong, and that strategy worked for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>When I was recruited to play lacrosse in high school, a coach told me I couldn\u2019t shoot. The following year, we played his team\u2014and I scored. Sales became my new arena. Comments like \u201cYou\u2019re not good enough\u201d motivated me, and I made it my mission to prove everyone wrong.<\/p>\n<p>And I did. I outsold everyone, became a top performer, and eventually ran the entire sales team.<\/p>\n<p>For years, I wore those victories like a badge of honor. I thought\u00a0<em>This is what success looks like<\/em>.\u00a0<em>This is what it takes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But then I started asking myself some hard questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do I really want to go through life trying to prove others wrong?<\/li>\n<li>What happens when there\u2019s no one left to prove wrong?<\/li>\n<li>Am I okay with being driven by anger, fear, or resentment?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I realized that kind of motivation was exhausting, unsustainable, and, in the long run, unfulfilling. It\u2019s about being driven by your values, not by someone else\u2019s judgments.<\/p>\n<p>When you align your life with your values, every day feels motivating and purposeful. You don\u2019t need someone to tell you you\u2019re \u201cnot good enough\u201d to light a fire under you. Your values become your fuel.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Shifting from External to Internal Motivation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This didn\u2019t happen overnight. It\u2019s a practice\u2014a daily commitment to break free from old patterns.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how I did it:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Step 1: Awareness<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The first step is noticing when you\u2019re being driven by external validation or negative emotions.<\/p>\n<p>Start paying attention to your thoughts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are you acting out of fear of failure?<\/li>\n<li>Are you trying to prove someone wrong?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Simply noticing these patterns is the beginning of breaking free.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Step 2: Presence<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Negative emotions often pull you into the past (regret) or the future (worry). Engage your senses to bring yourself back to the present.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rub your thumb and forefinger together and feel the ridges of your skin.<\/li>\n<li>Take a deep breath and notice the sensation of air moving through your nostrils<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Step 3: Forgiveness<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Don\u2019t beat yourself up for falling into old patterns. These habits have been with you for years. Forgive yourself and remind yourself that growth is a journey, not a destination.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Step 4: Practice<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Repetition is key. Keep practicing awareness, presence, and forgiveness. The more you do, the easier it becomes to shift your mindset.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Step 5: Activate Your Values<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This is a game-changer.
