How Slowing Down Helped Me Heal
My eyes were completely swollen shut. And no level of testing or specialty doctor could figure out what was happening to me. Ongoing steroid treatments were the only thing that helped, and it was crushing my immune system.
For months, I had massive, painful rashes under my armpits, chest, neck, and face.
I had gotten every allergy test done. Went to multiple doctors. And spent thousands of dollars trying to figure out why this kept happening to me.
Coincidentally, my partner and I began our classes for Transcendental Meditation during a week that I was in a full flare-up.
I remember apologizing to the teacher for my disfigurement and letting everyone know it wasn’t contagious.
I was so wounded, exhausted, and utterly depleted from trying so hard to be healthy again, and nothing would work.
So, I figured learning how to meditate couldn’t hurt.
You see, we were there because James had recently been diagnosed with spinal stenosis and degenerative disc disease. They said he had the spine of a 70-year-old with the condition and needed multiple surgeries to improve. He was in his 20s at the time.
And he was sure he’d be able to take his healing into his own hands. So he researched what all the richest people in the world did with this diagnosis. In other words, if money weren’t an obstacle, what might he try?
And surprisingly, he found research that directly linked spinal tissue regeneration to transcendental meditation. So James was down to give it a try and invited me along.
What I thought “couldn’t hurt” wound up being the answer to all my medical issues. Something I never expected as a possibility.
In just my 3rd meditation practice, I had a download. A very clear message came through that I hadn’t heard before.
⚡THE FACE WIPES YOU’RE USING AT THE GYM ARE CREATING YOUR RASH.⚡

I took the package of wipes to my doctor and they said, “Oh, yep. That makes sense. Many of these ingredients are allergens we don’t test for.”
Never used those wipes again. Never had another day of pain from these rashes.
ALL BECAUSE I SLOWED DOWN. MEDITATED. AND LISTENED TO THE WISDOM I HAD NOT MADE ROOM FOR BEFORE.

And guess what? With meditation, movement and shifts in eating, James made such a quick and full recovery that his doctor said there “must have been an error with his original x-rays”. He simply had never seen such a miraculous recovery without any traditional medical intervention.
Meditation isn’t just for woo-woo connection. It gives your mind the space to process what’s present and release what no longer serves you.
After my breakthrough session, I knew meditation was something I had to continue for the rest of my life.
That was Feb 17th, 2017. I’ve meditated at least once a day since then without hesitation.
Whether it’s 1 minute or 1 hour, it’s become my daily habit that helps my mind, body and spirit know that I’m with them. Not fighting against, but in harmony with them.
If I had told MaryBeth in 2017 that one day I’d become a global leader in guided meditations and have my tracks listened to by hundreds of thousands of people all over the world, I would have giggled. Because that was so far from who I was then. I thought that was for “certain kinds of people”, and I wasn’t one of them.
But now I know that we all deserve the gift of meditation. Every kind of us! And to do it in a way that meets you where you are. Not in some perfectionist vision of what it “should be”.
As we close Mental Health Awareness Month, I’m celebrating with the upcoming release of my 365 DailySpark guided meditations to get you grounded in just 2-3 minutes a day. ✨
Because for most people, two 20-minute sessions a day is not realistic. But 2-3 minutes of a soul snack while you sip your morning coffee? Now that’s doable!
It’s a way you can completely change your life for the better, one day at a time.
Imagine what “allergic face wipes” you might uncover in your own life. When you slow down and tune in, life unlocks with so much more grace and less struggle.
