How I Discovered the Emotion Code

My journey with The Emotion Code started in an unexpected way—through wild mustangs.

When my wife, MaryBeth, was preparing for a month-long retreat to gentle wild horses—mustangs that had never been touched by humans—she asked her instructor for a book recommendation. The first one she suggested was The Emotion Code by Dr. Bradley Nelson.

As someone who’s always exploring ways to grow, feel better, and help others, this immediately resonated with both of us. So, we listened to The Emotion Code audiobook on our cross-country drive. From the very first chapters, I felt something click. I had finally found a clear, simple, and powerful way to engage in energy work that helped me go deeper than I ever had before.

But what solidified my belief in this work was seeing it in action, on wild horses.

With humans, we sometimes question whether shifts are just in our heads. But it’s undeniable when you witness an untamed animal change before your eyes after energy work—there’s no overthinking or analysis. I’ll never forget a moment with our mustang, Norby. He had been withdrawn and unresponsive, clearly struggling. After just one Emotion Code session, his demeanor shifted completely. It was like watching a heavy fog lift.

Since then, I’ve used the Emotion Code with myself, my loved ones, clients, and our animals—and the changes I’ve witnessed continue to amaze me. I’ve experienced feeling stuck when trying to achieve a goal or triggered by something I thought I had already worked through. And now, when those blocks arise, I have a tool that helps clear the path.

Since I can remember I’ve panicked whenever I saw spiders (especially in the house). James worked on it and released a lot of different emotions around it. What if I’ve tried everything and nothing works?

I hear this all the time. The Emotion Code is different—it speaks directly to your body’s stored energy and asks what it’s ready to release. Many clients say it’s the missing piece they didn’t know they needed.

I don’t want to relive past experiences. Is this like talk therapy?

Not at all. This is not therapy and I am not a medical professional. The session is guided, gentle, and non-invasive.

Can this really work over the phone or video?

Yes. Energy is not bound by location. I’ve done hundreds of remote sessions, and the shifts are just as powerful as in-person.

What if I don't feel anything?
