And I’ve been there, too.
One evening, I was ready for a rare night alone (I love having time alone)—everything lined up for a cozy dinner and some time to unwind. But as I was about to dig in, I got a call from my partner, MaryBeth—her car had broken down, and she needed help.
Instantly, I felt my “victim” mindset kick in, hearing myself think, Why does this have to happen now? Can’t I just have one peaceful night?

At that moment, I had two choices: 1. let my inner “victim” take over, or 2. pause, reframe my reaction, and decide how to respond. I chose to take a breath, enjoy a bit of my meal before heading out, and show up with a positive mindset to help MaryBeth.
That simple choice was powerful. By reframing my initial frustration, I stayed aligned with my values of Compassion and Helpfulness, which helped me shift out of the victim role and respond with purpose.
I learned that while you can’t control everything that happens to you, you can control how you respond.
