Embracing Sensitivity: Lessons Learned from Wild Mustangs and Overcoming Emotional Challenges

My entire life, I’ve been labeled, judged, and shamed as being “overly sensitive.”

As a crybaby, I was taught that emotions weren’t okay and constantly threatened with “I’ll give you something to cry about,” which guaranteed violence would follow.

I believed my sensitivity, both to my feelings and those of others, was my worst quality—a burden I needed to numb, hide, and reject to be accepted in the “real world.”

As an adult, I now see my sensitivity as my superpower, my purpose, and my greatest gift to the world—something no amount of labeling, shaming, or bullying can ever take from my empowered, beautifully sensitive self.

So I have a soft spot when I see or hear others being put down for those same qualities.

You see, before I left for my 24-Day Wild Mustang Adventure (check out parts 1 and 2 if you missed them), my neighbor had tearfully confided in me that she was going to have to euthanize her horse, Ollie, because he was too sensitive. She was afraid that if she sold him, he’d be beaten so badly that it was the kindest way to give him peace.

I asked her to hold off on any big moves until I came back from my training to see if I could help him.

A week later, I started to do remote energy work (that I was being trained in) and his owner said he started to change for the better!!

As a result, she asked me if I knew anyone who had my training who’d want to adopt him, and surprisingly, I said…

🖐️I would!! Ollie & Norby feel like a divine duo. 💙💚

So today, I’m shocked (this was never the plan) 😂 and in complete love 🥰 to say we’re proud parents of 2 super-sensitive 2-year-olds.

Both our boys were at risk of being beaten into submission or put down for their sensitivities.

Now, James and I proudly model a calm, loving, and supportive connection, embracing their sensitivities and helping them navigate triggers with patience, compassion, and love—something we do daily for ourselves, each other, and our clients. ❤️‍🩹

As I close out this Mustang musings series, I had to end with the power of sensitivity and the wisdom gained as a direct result of deeply feeling choosing what serves (and doesn’t stunt) you in that journey. I trust these gems will serve you, too:

  1. 🥊Sometimes you have to fight for what you want.

It would have been “easier” not to adopt our boys, but sometimes your heart, intuition, and spirit just KNOW it’s the only choice, and you’ll do whatever it takes to make it work.

In the process of figuring out the details, massive childhood wounds were reopened – leaving my soul bruised and my mental health torn to shreds. I fell into suicidal ideation during a time that should have been filled with curiosity and excitement.

And in a moment of deep darkness, I said to my fellow participant, “I think I’m going to give up. It’s too painful.” She looked me square in the eyes and said, “Sometimes you have to fight for what you want. And you cannot let anyone take that away from you.”

    She was right.

So, I reached out to my horse community. Within 24 hours, I had a loving home for my horses on the same mountain range I live on, with a family I adore, who are 100% committed to the journey together.

Since becoming Ollie’s guardians and getting the place ready for Norby’s arrival in a couple of weeks, James and I have never felt more purpose.

Your dreams are worth fighting for. PERIOD

If anyone tells you your heart’s desires aren’t worthy – immediately set hard boundaries. Do your best not to take it personally. Reach out to the people who see and support your vision. And nurture that positive energy.

It can be better than you ever imagined – and that’s exactly what I’m experiencing right now.

💝If you feel called to be a part of our support team on this new adventure, check out our “Baby Registry” for these sweet boys. I’ll even gift you access to my Knowing & Living Your Values Course ($97) to thank you.

  2. 🗓️ Your (manmade) timeline isn’t real.

We humans sure love timelines, deadlines, and SMART goals. We think that if we just have a list, we can tick things off one by one in a timely fashion, then we’re a success. And 9 out of 10 times, that creates the hurried, rushed, stressful energy. When it comes to horses, especially wild Mustangs, rushing only makes things worse if you want a positive relationship. While Norby had exceeded expectations in the beginning, by the end, he was “behind” and labeled as “something was wrong with him.” As a result, he was getting loads of extra attention from all the professional trainers to get him through. But it was too much. In hindsight, what he really needed was a break. Not extra long sessions. But because we only had a few days left, the energy became rushed, and our humanness wanted to control the schedule.

Thankfully, I was working with trainers who truly had the horses’ best intentions in mind, and a new plan was made. Norby would stay behind another month, have more time to reach his milestones, and rest in between.

In 2 weeks (after 30 extra days of training), I get to pick him up. And guess what? He still hasn’t met all his milestones. And that’s okay. He can have all the time he needs in the world. No manmade timeline is required.

Imagine how often you’ve imposed deadlines on yourself based on other obligations or ideal timelines. Now, consider softening those boundaries, allowing yourself to be human while still pursuing your bigger vision.

Think about how much kinder you’d be to yourself if you stopped comparing, judging, or forcing yourself to grind and instead gracefully extended your timeline.

  3. You can’t hide energy.

Energy impacts everything and everyone. Especially us sensitive ones.

An unexpected mega gift of this Mustang Adventure was having both an Animal Communicator and a certified Body and Emotion Code practitioner lead the training. So, literally, at any moment, if something was “off” that we couldn’t quite figure out, we had energy workers to step in.

In the process, I learned about the heart wall, absorbed, inherited, and compound emotions that get trapped in our bodies and impact our ability to function. I was trained in a specific methodology to use muscle testing to uncover what these trapped emotions are and how to release them through very simple and shockingly life-changing technique.

I witnessed and performed massive energetic shifts with Norby and me when I chose to tune into the energy and invite it out from hiding. Because the truth is, the energy was always there – this was just a chance to acknowledge it and let it go.

Imagine what might be possible if, instead of ignoring that low-vibration energy in yourself, that instead you had a specific technique to find out its origins and then release it so it no longer takes over your well-being. How much different would your life be?
